The only other thing I will add is the last time I was looking at houses we looked at one new place where the entire basement was finished living space with no shop or storage. Some people have hobbies and projects that take up a lot of space, and I can understand taking up garage space for that too.įor the past twenty years I have been lucky enough to have 3.5 stalls at both the houses I have lived in, so room for a project car or car and small projects. That is fine, not everybody has the skills or inclination to fix stuff. I also see the spotless garages where the car is always parked and there may be a mower and some yard equipment and little more. I really don't understand that, and as stated above, not really smart use or conservation of your assets. I see a lot of garages people fill with cheap crap they really don't use, bins of clothing, old furniture, etc., and they park their cars outside. But one of my first goals after going out into the world on my own was getting a permanent place to park my cars, both to save the cars, have a place to work on them, and not have to scrape frost or snow off the windows when I went to work in the morning. I love working on things and barely ever hire anything out. Been a garageaholic for 50 years, don't plan that to change until I'm staring at the bottom of the dirt." So it seems we coud be addicts like those at Gambling Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous, have a meeting introducing yourself "Hi, I'm Andy and I'm a Garageaholic. Though, he does like that he "has a guy" (me) able and willing to do tire changes for him on his big Kawasaki, do maintenance for him when his bike needs it. A good firend of mine has offered to come over and help me clear out the garage. Many may know which end of the hammer or screwdriver is the control end, but many simply hire everything out. We of the "true garage" mindset must get this kind of side glances daily from spouses, partners, friends, etc that have NO idea how to do most of what we do. A garage is a place where work is done, maintenence is done, things are built/repaired/created. Um.no, that is only a parking area for vehicles, it is not a "garage". Again, that glance now saying "See? That's how a garage is supposed to look." TV commercials come on for "Got Junk?" and various other likewise services that show an excited person having fun pointing at stuff in the garage, and its gone! Magic! The little pile of kids stuff, an old kiddy pool, old toys, maybe an old dresser, just point and gone! These commercials come on TV and my wife shoots a raised eyebrow glance my way, meaning "do you really have to keep all that crap in the garage?" Or when driving trough the neighborhood and someone's garage door is open, inside is maybe a car and an SUV, three bicycles, two yard rakes and a roller garbage bin, and NOTHING more.
